Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.

Was looking for a book to get me out of a reading stump. I found the writing style to be a bit exhausting. I will probably return to this in the future when I'm out of that slump. It is captivating and goofy. Just not in the mood for this style right now.

The plot was very interesting, the storytelling was very unsatisfactory. The characters were as flat as a flat-earth-theorist believes the earth to be. It was a comedy in the beginning, but after a certain point (around the 70% mark) the writer decided that it should no longer be a comedy. This was bizarre in a very unimpressive way. A book so insincere to its characters and its theme, I did not like it at all. The plot was good though.

That was quite a read, I must say. At the start It was a bit confusing as the narrative was not linear and different timelines only made it more chaotic but It all started to make sense once you're couple of chapters through. In the concluding chapters however, it was again chaotic when the narrative jump from person to person in a single chapter and sometimes they are not in the same timeline.

Nonetheless, it would be unfair to say it was not gripping, the way the mysteries surrounding the character were gradually lifted was more satisfying than I thought it would be and I was constantly in tug of war with different characters, sometimes empathetic to a certain character when it all turned around and I found rooting for other character instead. The book perfectly laid out our reality and the way our society is organised where we are so disconnected with people in our vicinity. It is a wake up call for the people who think 'strangers' are the nuisance that should be avoided whenever possible. We forget that our best friends once were strangers to us and that all that stands between stranger and best friend is the belief that they are not same as us.
