Project's blog

NEW category system, profile page, search results page, and book covers.

Dear Zlibrary community,

We continue to inform you about new features on our site. As we've already mentioned in the previous post, we're planning to refresh the design of some pages/elements and improve the functionality.

Let's start with the preview of our new category system, a feature that we've spent a lot of time and resources on. If you're not already familiar with it, be sure to check it now. In a few words, we have divided the categories into Fiction / Non-Fiction, fundamentally revised the past categories, and added new ones. At the moment most of the books don't have categories. Unfortunately, we can't do this automatically due to technical limitations, so if you know which category a particular book belongs to, please spend a minute to put in a category using the option "Suggest a correction", thus you will help other users to find the book quickly.

Please note that some subcategories may not be displayed on the category page, because they don’t include any books. As soon as at least one book appears there, that subcategory will immediately become available. If you consider that a category/subcategory is missing, our Support Team is always open to your suggestions :)

The results of fundraising, book rating, and a new page of download history.

Dear Zlibrary Community,

We have some good news to share! The latest fundraising campaign was successfully completed, with about 200 countries participating! This is a sign to us of how our library has grown over the past few years, and all because of you. Thank you for putting up with bugs that come up from time to time, for reporting on errors with lightning speed, and for actively participating in the “life” of our library. Back in 2009, no one thought this project would grow into something big. Your touching feedbacks, which you send to us and post under the blog entry, give us a sense that we've come all this way for a reason. Thank you all!

So let's finally talk about the new features. We've recently implemented a feature to rate the plot of the book and the quality of the file. We hope this will help you choose the highest-quality version of the book, and we will be able to remove books with a low-quality rating in the future. This feature is located on the book page, just under the "author". Find it? You may wonder why two different colored scores are displayed. The orange score is for the plot of the book and the green one is for the quality of the file.

Please note: any user can rate the plot, but only users who downloaded the book can rate the quality.

New options: "book requests" and save your search filters

Hello booklovers,

Zlibrary team is on the air and we’re going to share the news that has happened since our last “meeting”.

Finally, the long-awaited "Book request" option is now available on our website! And from now on, you don't have to write us an email or a comment asking to add books, you can just use this option. All you need to know is an ISBN of the book and our system will automatically fill in the necessary information.

Please make sure that we don't have the book in the library before creating a request. If the book is available but you need a different file format, you won't be able to request it.

Besides subscribing to a book request (using the "Tracking" button), you can also set up a notification: either by email or through your account. Later we will make a search through book requests and a filter by category.

Telegram bot, updated profile menu, Booklists and more

We know 2020 isn’t shaping up to be a good year, but we’re still trying to make it better for our ZLibrary family. And we are excited to announce the last updates of this year.

We have finally launched our own Telegram bot! To access it, please use the Telegram icon in a footer, or visit the Edit Profile page. Using this bot you can download extra books in addition to your daily limit on the website. However, if you want to use options such as File conversion, Send-to-email, Send-to-Kindle, Send-to-Google Drive or download a book that is more than 50 MB, you will need to proceed to the website version. There you can also find the latest information about available domains by using the command /weblink. Just hurry up to install our Telegram bot and enjoy the books for the upcoming holidays! ✨

Before we move on to the second key feature, we want to draw your attention to the redesigned menu. We've separated your profile menu sections from the general ones to make it easier to navigate through the menu.

Black Friday promotion, reward system, tabular view, quick search field and more

Dear booklovers!

Firstly we would like to announce that we are launching the Black Friday promotion from today (November 22nd) until December 1st. During this period you will receive unlimited downloads (or 999 downloads) for 31 days for any donation. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the collection of your favourite books on Christmas days!

We also want to share with you the exciting news: we have redesigned the Top Z-Librarians page and launched a reward system for the most active users! Users will be rewarded according to the rating for a week and a month. At the moment the top of last week: Beowulf, jourmager and the top of October: Big Bang, umberto, jourmager (editors) and FRANCESCO, Glos, AvidReader (uploaders) have already received their awards. We also plan to reward other users who have actively participated in the life of our library (yes, we are talking about those heroes from the Overall rating). Thank you so much for your contribution! Our book collection wouldn’t be the same without your hard work. Do you want to be one of them? You can check the rules here.

September fundraising, website internationalization, new logo and other updates

Hello, ZLibrarians!

We would like to share the good news: the September fundraising campaign has been successfully completed. As you know every September and March we launch additional fundraising for the project maintenance and development. And thanks to your active support we are achieving our goals and moving forward! You are the best! We also know that many users failed to donate, but they really wanted to support us. Thank you very much for your efforts, we hope that by the next fundraising we will correct this situation.

Have you ever wondered how many languages are there in the world? A few months ago we asked ourselves whether it is convenient for users from different countries to use the English version of the site (the most complete and up-to-date version at that time) and realised that the project needs to be internationalized. So we would like to announce that we are translated into 28 languages now (some languages will be available soon): Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese. Hooray! You can try it now by changing the language at the bottom of the page. Please inform us by email If you find any translation mistakes. We’ll be very grateful for your help!

Converting files. We have slightly increased the limit and now the files up to 8 MB are available for conversion. Unfortunately, we can’t increase it more due to the technical limitations :(

Home page, "Mark as downloaded" button and improved book recommendations

Hello, book lovers!
Zlibrary project team is on the air and today we’re going to tell you about several interesting updates. Let’s go!

Do you know that we have a home page? On this page, you can always find the relevant information about available domains (books and articles) for your region. As soon as you get to the Home page, our system will automatically match an available domain for you. We recommend you to save it to your bookmarks in case any of the site addresses doesn't work. You can also get to this page by clicking on the “ZLibrary Home” button in the upper left corner of the page.

Domains separation, sending to Google Drive, FTP bulk uploader and the new language filter

Welcome to another update of ZLibrary!

Let's start with the main update of this month: domains separation by region. If you go to b-ok.cc you will be automatically redirected to the domain according to your region. Why is this update necessary? The separation into regions will improve the stability and accessibility of the service in the future, as well as the download speed. Don’t worry, books are uploaded equally to all the domains. Since this is a large and complex update the site may not work well sometimes, please report on current issues to our email [email protected].

We noticed that many users save books to Google Drive and decided to simplify this process: now you can immediately send books to your Google Drive, moreover, they will be saved in the automatically created “Zlibrary” folder. To use this wonderful option, just click on the arrow on the Download button.

Fundraising results, improved mobile version, Your uploads page and mini-survey

First of all, we would like to congratulate everyone on another successful fundraising campaign! In truth, we did not expect it to be successful, as it fell on such a difficult period for all of us. Even in this situation, a lot of users have supported our project, and we are very grateful for that! Our Team wholeheartedly says Thank you! The funds received will be used to improve the library and I will tell you in confidence, this year we are planning big updates!

Despite the quarantine, we continue working on the improvements. We noticed that many people use the library from their phones and thought about how to improve the mobile version. We will not describe in detail all the changes, but now using the mobile version has become easier and more convenient.

Improved full-text search, spring fundraising campaign and unlimited downloads

The Covid-2109 pandemic has gripped the world and more and more regions are quarantining: schools, airports, universities, regions, and even whole countries are closing. And if you are currently quarantined at home - make good use of your time with reading books.

March 15 comes soon, and we traditionally run the additional fundraising event. For those who don't know what we are talking about: twice a year (in September and March) we hold an additional fundraising campaign. And if you support us during this period you will get unlimited downloads for 31 days for any donation. Your active support gives strength to our Team and inspires to work. Only thanks to your support, we not only exist but also actively develop. Each donated dollar is not only money for us, but it is also the confidence that you really need our project!

Now we are going to tell what changes have occurred in the Full-text search. What is the Full-text search and how it differs from the usual search? Answers to these questions you will find in our last post. We finally indexed all the articles that we have today. That means 70+ million articles are available in the Full-text search now

Many users have already tested the full-text search on articles and shared their impressions. And according to your numerous wishes, we have implemented two features that will make the search results as relevant to your requests as possible. It is available both for articles and for books. First, we added the ability to filter full-text search results by year, language and file format. Please note that only the filter by year is available for articles.

Full-text search for articles, highlighting downloaded books, view pdf in a browser and download history correction

It’s 2020, and we’re doing even more to improve your experience on our library!

In this update, you will learn about highlighting downloaded books, the full-text search for articles, the ability to view pdf files in a browser, the improvement of the search engine and how to delete download history. Interested? Let's get started!

First, we want to share the long-awaited feature such is highlighting previously downloaded books. Finally, we did it! Now you can easily identify a book that you have already downloaded because it will be highlighted on the page with search results, personal recommendations, most popular, saved books and on the book page. If you hover over a downloaded book a hint will appear with the information when this book was downloaded.

If you remember just a year ago we released a big and important update for books – the full-text search. For newcomers and those who don’t click on all the buttons, explain the full-text search is a search on the content. You can find books on a word or even a phrase and now this feature is available for articles. The rules are the same: on the main page switch to the “Full-text search” and search for articles by word/phrase. Be sure to test it now!

Our next update has affected pdf files. As you already know, the little arrow on the Download button performs different functions: file converting and displaying other book formats. Now under this arrow is hidden the new option for all pdf files called “Open in browser” that will allow you to open the file directly in your browser, and there you can decide what to do about it: save or read online. This option is also relevant for articles. Please note that using this option counts as the downloaded file.

Results of the year, publisher display, available book formats and new languages for a search query

Hey ZLibrarians!

ZLibrary Team wishes you Happy Holidays! We hope you read all the books you plan this year and our Team will do our best to give access to these books! We are very grateful to all of you for the support (donations, feedbacks, books) that you have provided during the last year. That year would not have been the most productive of our project without your help. In just a year, the following updates were implemented: recommender system, book conversion, ZAlerts, saving favourite books, terms, new book uploader, full-text search and etc. Thank you!

So, we are happy to share exciting news about some useful updates. Perhaps you noticed a new field Publisher appeared on the page with the search results. Now you can search for books not only by title / author / ISBN, but also by publisher. Did not know that? You can try it now.

Send epub to kindle, book autocomplete on ISBN and search in Chinese.

Hello!

Today we have 3 updates on the agenda. The first update is for Kindle users. As you know, epub files are not available for sending to the Kindle, but we listened to your suggestions and made it possible to convert epub and send it to your Kindle. To do this, use the button next to the "Download" and select the format you need. There will be 2 options: download the file or send it to the Kindle. However, remember that for the conversion option there is a limitation on the file size: no more than 5 Mb.

Fundraising results, new book uploader, send to Kindle update and improved Top Zlibrarians

Hello!

Today we want to announce the successful completion of the fundraising and introduce 3 updates. First, our team wants to thank all of you for active participation in the fundraising campaign. The goal was successfully achieved! It should be reminded that users who have supported us during this period received 1 month of unlimited downloads. Congrats!

And the first update we want to tell you is the improved version of the book uploader. Now you can upload many files at once! After uploading a file, you need to fill in the necessary information about the book and add a cover. Allowed formats are txt, pdf, fb2, epub, lit, lrf, mobi, odt, rtf, snb, djv, djvu, azw3, azw. Finally, large files can be uploaded too. As this feature is still under development so some small problems may occur. But we will try to fix it as soon as possible.

The second update related to the option send to Kindle. We want to draw your attention that our address has changed so you need to re-add our new address to the While list on your kindle. You will find the address at this link (for example, km1744***@bookmail.org). To make it easier to start using this option we have created a special page with the instructions .

Started fundraising, books moderation, report a problem option, server failures and other news

Hi there!

What’s up? We have a lot of news to share!
As you already know, we have recently started additional fundraising campaign. So what is it? We hold this event 2 times a year (September and March) to our project maintenance and development. During this period you can get access to unlimited downloads for 31 days for any donation! Only thanks to your support over the past year we have made such improvements as Full-text search, ZAlerts, Terms, Books correction feature, “Save for later” option, Recommender system and much more. Thank you for giving us such support!

Now let's talk about the updates. We decided to provide our users with the ability to moderate newly uploaded books. This will significantly reduce the number of problem books! So on the Moderation page (at the top of the page next to your nickname) you can vote for a book: OK if the book is suitable for our library, BAD if there are any problems. Please note this option works in the test mode and available only for some "active" users.

Data recovery, terms, top Z-Librarians, new languages and other updates

Hi there! Our website is finally recovered after a server crash. We were very pleased to receive so many letters and comments with words of support during this difficult period. Thank you for that (and special thanks for X[1011] and Librarian from LG project for your help in restoring)!

Unfortunately, not all files were recovered (but we successfully restored more than 99.8% of our collection) and about 13 thousand books were lost... but don't worry, we have most of these books in other formats. So now we need your help. We have created a page that displays the current list of irretrievably lost books. If you have something from the list - please upload it to our library. Also, do not be surprised if your limit suddenly decreases (as you remember we doubled the limit only for the recovery period).

So, we continue to acquaint you with the new updates on our site. The most curious users may have noticed and tried out our new feature named “Terms”. Terms are the most important words/concepts or phrases found in the text of the book. Using terms you can quickly understand the book contents.

Server crash & Books correction feature

Hello! First of all, our Team wants to thank all users for your support! On July 20 we had a major server crash and many books and covers were damaged. Some services like Online reader and File conversion may work unstably. The recovery of all data will take up to 2 weeks (you can track the recovery process on the main page). So we came to the decision at this time to double the download limits for all users until the problem is completely resolved.

We get a lot of suggestions for help in uploading missed books and we really appreciate it.  Do not worry, we have all the files but to restore it will take some time.

And about the good news: today we will tell you about the new option for correcting book information.
Thanks to your letters and comments we learn about errors in the description of books (for example, incorrect title, author, cover and etc.). Before we did not have the opportunity to edit such information but now it is possible. Unfortunately, we can’t check every book so we’ll need your help. Now if you notice that the information about the book is incorrect or completely absent you can offer us your correction option by clicking on the “Suggest a correction” button (see the screenshot below).

New option: save and organize your favourite books.

Hi there! Today we want to introduce to you our new option named “Save for later”. We have received a lot of letters from you with requests to make it possible to mark books for downloading it later. But we did not only that but even more. Let’s see. So, to save your favourite book you need to go to the book page and click on the “Save for later” button. Just one click and it is saved to your profile. You can check all your saved books in the Profile menu “Saved books” tab.

One million new books, “most popular” section, renewed main page and other updates

Hey!
Today we will tell you about our important new updates. Let's start! First of all, we want to share the good news: 1 million of fiction books were added to the library! Gradually our book collection is growing and it's great!

Also in addition to the Recommended books section, we added the “Most Popular” section. There you can find books that were most often downloaded by other users. Maybe among these books, you will find the one you have long wanted to read? Btw, this section updates every day.

Successful completion of fundraising and new sorting options

We want to start with the words of gratitude to all users who were not indifferent and supported our project. More than 2,700 people from different parts of the world made a donation and helped us collect the necessary amount and even more. Our team is very grateful to you, for us it is a very big responsibility. Also users who made a donation from 15.03 to 01.04 will get access to unlimited downloads for 30 days. Thank you very much for using our library and for inspiring us with new ideas!

And now about the updates. In the Recently added category, we also sorted books by categories. You can immediately see the new books on the topic that interests you. As usual, this option is in the upper right corner.

Book conversion, sorting results and personal recommendations

Less than a month passed and we have already prepared 3 new updates!

Let's start with the most important one - the conversion of books. This option allows you to change the file format just in one click and download directly to your computer. It is located next to the "download" button (see the screenshot). After you select the file format you need to wait 1-2 minutes and then downloading link will appear (no need to reload the page and repeatedly click on the download button). So far, only books with 'epub', 'fb2', 'pdf', 'mobi', 'txt', 'rtf' format and no more than 5 MB are available for conversion. We also warn that the converted file may differ from the original.

The next update we want to tell you about is sorting the search results.

Recommender system: a new way to find books to read

We would like to present our new and important update. About 2 weeks ago we launched a download recommendation system. The book page now displays other books that may also be useful and interesting for you.

You can have a look at the first results of the system, for example, on these books:

Thermal Remote Sensing in Land Surface Processes
The Python Book: The Ultimate Guide to Coding with Python
Biblical interpretation of the early church

We started collecting statistics only a little more than 2 weeks ago, so recommendations are available only for a limited list of books (just over 100,000 at the time of publication). Over time, the number of books containing recommendations will grow.

Advanced search, new categories, improved exact match and other updates

In this post, we will talk about new updates over the past 3 weeks.

We continue to improve the section with articles. To simplify the search for articles, we added 2 options: Advanced Search and search by journal title. Advanced search is located under the search field and allows you to filter articles by publication year (for example, from 2005 to 2008). The second improvement makes it possible to search by journal title.

The following update applies to both articles and books. The search page now also displays the number of search results. You can immediately see if something was found according to your search query on other section of the site. For example, if you are looking for books on the subject “Kyoto History”, you will immediately see if there are articles on this topic.

ZAlerts

Today we want to tell you about the new useful feature “ZAlerts” and its applications.

ZAlerts allow you to be notified about the availability of new books according to your search query. The search query can be the name of a particular book/author, ISBN or even a topic that interests you.

So how to use it. For example, you need a book from the “Coming soon” category, but this book hasn’t been uploaded into the database yet. In order not to check the availability of this book several times a day, you can simply create a ZAlert by clicking on the tooltip under the book and when uploading process finishes, you will receive an email with a book link.

Full-text search, FB sharing, books covers and other updates

Let’s start with the most important new feature, which everyone should have already tried - full-text search. So, what is it? And what’s the difference from the usual search? The search is possible not only by title but also by the content of books. However, this feature is still under development, so it will be gradually improved.

We are very grateful that you share the link to our library on social networks. So, let's combine the pleasant with the useful? By sharing our link you can get a nice bonus. Using the “Share on Facebook” button (find it here) you can increase the daily download limit for books by 10! This option will be valid only for a month, but it can also summarize with the donation.
